Its summer time at your Granny’s house the heat from the summer day is hot and humid. You can’t seem to get any relief from the blustering heat, so you go inside and sit in front of Granny’s box fan. Within minutes you begin to cool down and the breeze is a refreshing stimulant to the moments before. Does this remind you of a time in your life whether as a child or an adult those moments of delight in front of the box fan? Or maybe envision yourself on the beach and the warmth from the sun beaming down on you, as you listen to the roar of the ocean and hear the giggles of children playing in the sand. But one of the most enjoying moments happens when a soft breeze begins to blow to cool you off so you can get some relief from the day’s heat. And as the wind gently brushes across your face you begin to get so consumed and comfortable that you fall asleep. I am sure most of us have experienced the wind on more than one occasion and found it to be so peaceful. But have you ever just stopped to think about the power of the wind? Why is it so intriguing? We can’t see it, touch it, smell it or taste it yet we know it when it arrives because we can feel it.
John 3:8
The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.
Yet the wind can be very powerful. Look what happens when you add water to a powerful wind you experience hurricanes. A violently rotating column of wind will give you a tornado. Add snow and a powerful wind and you just might get a blizzard or throw in some sand and get a sandstorm so violent you cannot see in front of you, beside or behind you.
Jeremiah 10:13
Then he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar; he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth. He sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses.
I thought about this also in relation to the Holy Spirit and the evidence in knowing that you know, that you know when it has come upon you. Strange things on the inside of you begin to burst forth. A hallelujah jumps out of your mouth, thank you Jesus, usually follows, then for some strange reason your hands are raised toward heaven as tears begin to stream down you face. You can’t see the spirit of God but you can most certainly feel it. Just like fire shut up in your bones!
Sometimes we get so bogged down with our trials and Satan trying to break us by making us believe that it’s not going to happen, that are prayers are not going to be answered and that we are not worthy to ask God to bless us. Then God sends the power of the wind to fall fresh on us, so that we are able to experience the awesomeness of God’s breath. Yes, this is what I believe the wind and the Holy Spirit have in common…God’s breath.
Job 33:4
The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
A holy breath, the same breath that breathed life into Adam and that continues to breathe on our hopeless situations. All it takes from an Almighty God is just to breathe on us and allow His spirit to flow through us and give us the peace and reassurance that everything is going to be alright. Just like the wind we experienced on the warm summer day on the beach, or the box fan in the windowsill, that peaceful soothing breeze across our faces that made us feel so completely relaxed and content. So will the Holy Spirit as God allows it to fall fresh on us and when it hits you just right you can experience the “power” of the wind. You can’t contain it, nor can you explain it but it will over power you, so you must let it do what it was sent to do. So the next time you feel a breeze on your face or it ruffles up your hair, just say thank you Lord for breathing on me and remember there is power in the wind.
